Technology Innovation Summit (TI Summit) was hosted at Illinois Institute of Technology, Rice Campus, Wheaton, IL on November 16, 2011. TI Summit is an effort to bridge the gap between Technology, Innovation and community leadership. The first event’s experienced speakers like Bob Schillerstrom, former Chairman of DuPage County and Kevin Burns, Mayor of Geneva along with City CIOs and Technology leaders was very thought provoking and well received.
Technology leaders (IBM, Oracle, and Bahwan Cybertek) that have been engaged in improving efficiencies of government around the world focused on the technology best practices and industry trends. Sundar from Bahwan Cybertek pointed out as how lessons learned from as far as Middle East and Far East can help us learn a few things about different way of running the government technology that saves cost, increases efficiencies, and increases job opportunities for local citizens of the community.
CIOs of community candidly expressed their issues and challenges in implementing technology innovations. Scott Kinsella, CIO of City of Joliet presented a slide show with the conclusion that city of Joliet is not ready for Innovation. While the remark by Praveen Gupta, Director of Innovation center of IIT, directed that there is no right time for innovation rather innovation comes out as a product of need. Chad Michaelis, Director of IT for City of Wheaton mentioned that the size of Wheaton is so small that does not attract any innovation but yet the systems are over 14 years old and need to be updated. Ted , Technology head of City of Aurora pointed out that there is a communication gap between technology, innovation and government. Poonam Krishnan, CEO of Technology Company, Iyka, and brain behind putting this event together, later pointed out that this communication gap is what Technology Innovation summit is working towards bridging.
Technology Panel that was moderated by Philip McEntee, Managing Principal of the Technology Executive Network, and discussed as how technology best practices and industry trends are helping shape communities in other communities in the nation. Contributors of the panel were representatives of IBM and Oracle, and CIO of City of Joliet, Scott Kinsella. The discussions triggered thoughtful insights that needs follow up.
The leadership panel was moderated by Ms. Cindy Tomei, President, Valley Industrial Association and panel consisted of Mr. Kevin Burns, Mayor of Geneva, Mr. Chad Michaelis, Director of IT, City of Wheaton and Mr. Sundar Padmanabhan, VP- Public Sector Practice for Bahwan CyberTek Inc.
The event was attended by about 75 professionals and executives from collar counties, educational Institutions, and representatives of community leadership forums.
Executives of many city, villages, and counties like Hoffman Estate, St. Charles, Aurora, Geneva, Kane County, Dupage County, and many others were present and a very involved discussions were started to be followed up later to help collar counties with citizen’s engagement.
Keynote Mr. Bob Shillerstrom, Partner in law firm, ICEMiller and former Chairperson of DuPage County board candidly shared issues facing challenges in bringing innovations to county levels.
Keynote address delivered by Mr. Tony Hylton, Public Sector Technology Director of Verizon Business and former CIO of Cook county took the tour of need and directions of technology strategic needs for our community.
The two main people behind putting tech innovation event are- Poonam G. Krishnan, CEO of technology company, Iyka (www.iyka.com) and Praveen Gupta, Founder of Accelper (www.accelper.com), writer of many books on Innovation and Director of Innovation Center of IIT, hope to get similar support from Technology leaders and Government leaders to build on this knowledge exchange and bring about real economic growth in our communities.
