As a Teen Mother, Rape Survivor, High School Drop out, Mother, Wife and Stroke Survivor, Sherrell Anderson is on a mission to "Bring Our Teens Back." Sherrell, the mother of 3 children, one of which is a (soon to be) College Graduate has beaten the odds and proven that success can be achieved with strong drive and determination. She has dedicated her life to Teaching Teens the Benefits of Not Rushing into Sex through the Arts. By allowing the teens to be fully involved in their learning, she has gotten the attention of pre teens, teens and parents alike.
Every month you will be able to sit down, have an amazing "Conversation" with our teens. Topics change monthly and will allow our youth to discuss the issues that they face on a daily basis. We ask the question "What's The Rush" and unfortunately, they tell us about stories of Rape, Molestation, Bullying, Peer pressures and home life as a reason why they decide to have sex too soon. We have to teach them positive alternatives, allowing them to have a voice in order to make a Change. Parents are also invited and will be completely transformed as well.
No Judgement is our motto, Our Teens' Voice is our responsibility.
As a parent and community leader, it saddens me that we have lost so many of our children to instances of suicides, teen pregnancy, peer pressures, sexually transmitted diseases and violence. We no longer can turn a deaf ear to the cries of our children so I, along with my husband, Atlanta Fire Department Sergeant, Varlon R. Anderson, have founded an amazing faith based Not for Profit 501c3 Organization called Teens: What’s The Rush, Inc. We have found that our teens are lost, without direction and rather than listening to our pleas, they have gotten frustrated and are now ignoring authority. For years, we as adults have judged them and the results are negative behavior from a vast majority of our youth. We must teach our children in a way that is practical and realistic. With our ‘out of the box’ approach to Teaching the Benefits of Not Rushing into Sex through the Arts, we allow our Teens to be involved in the solution rather than just being part of the problem. We’ve also found that parents and adults have a huge weight on their shoulders as well, due to past deeply rooted issues of their own and as a result, not able to logically help nor truly answer the questions that their children have. Therefore, this problem affects and presents challenges for everyone involved because the signs aren’t noticed.
Our monthly small group series allow teens and parents to come together to discuss the problems that affect them in relation to sex, peer pressure, social issues and dating violence. Teens: What’s the Rush, Inc also has quarterly forums where our teens present skits and monologues on the teen experience. Using performing arts, we illustrate what they really deal with on a day-to-day basis. We are currently filming a series of short films that the teens are not only acting in, but they are also behind the lens. By showing the struggles they face and the negative outcomes if they aren’t reached in time, we are giving them a visual rather than just talking ‘at‘them. We must meet them where they are, especially in this age of technology where they are doing far more activities that we may know. We must gain their trust. They fully embrace this method because they are indirectly taught not to have sex while seeing what can happen, if they chose to. This approach has a high rate of proven success. They have a voice and we create a non-judgment environment, they let us know their problems, their hurts, the things that affect them personally, therefore they are willing to share stories. The consensus from many teens is that they really do not want to have sex so early, but peer pressures, sexually molestation and/or rape has caused them to see sex and violence as a way of life. Our children, as young as 9 years old, have told of compelling stories of sexual violence in their own lives. This is why our organization is so vital to preventing and reducing the incidences of teen sex. In addition to our forums and group meetings, we have a follow up plan with life coaches, therapists, psychologists, counselors that are ready to bridge the gap between Teens: What’s The Rush and society. Our goal is to have daily, weekly and summer enrichment programs geared to several areas of life. We plan to implement this program with many of the funds awarded by varioius grants.
We would like to invite you to share your voice with our community. We believe that a combination of like hearts and like voices will not only cause a new era to emerge in our children’s’ lives, but collectively we will make a change that we so desperately need. Specially, we are pleading with you to stand beside us to speak with the entire City of Atlanta, conduct a speech, participate in our awareness event and/or endorse Teens: What’s The Rush, Inc in a national campaign for the Prevention of Teen Sex, Pregnancy, STD’s, Dating Violence and other issues as it relates to our youth. Our teens have spoken and the major plead from them is to be treated like human beings rather than just children without a voice. If we listen to them, they will speak and we can help.
We invite you, our community members, to learn more about our organization by visiting www.teenswhatstherush.com.
Thank you for taking the time to read our letter and we look forward to speaking with you further about how you can come along side of this Very Necessary organization. I may be reached at the number below.
Sincerely,
Sherrell Anderson, Founder/Pres./CEO
