ATLANTA (June. 17, 2011) – Current Tennessee Titians Linebacker and Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta (BGCMA) Alumnus Rennie Curran will host a Carnival Day at the Brookhaven Boys & Girls Club on June 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in hopes to teach youth the importance of philanthropy.
As a 1990’s Brookhaven Club Alumnus, Curran felt the need to give back to his local Boys & Girls Club. “I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for the experience and lessons I learned while attending the Boys & Girls Club,” said Curran. “This is why I feel it is important to give back to the kids currently there, so that they may learn the lessons I learned and have the opportunities that were allotted to me.”
Each week during the summer program, Brookhaven Boys & Girls Club members put together a skit that demonstrates or discusses an important topic or issues. The week of June 20 is philanthropy week, and Curran along with Miss Liberia/Miss West African Mahaja Zeon will explain philanthropy and why it is essential to Club members.
In honor of philanthropy week at Brookhaven Boys & Girls Club, Club members will hold children’s book, school supplies and clothing drive from June 20 to June 24 which they will donate to Liberian children.
“My days at the Boys & Girls Club taught me the importance of respect, discipline and how to be independent at a young age,” said Curran. “The staff always did a great job of teaching us valuable life lessons while maintaining a fun family atmosphere.”
From 10:00 a.m. to noon, Club members will host a presentation on Liberia followed by a speech by Curran and Miss Liberia/Miss West Africa. Lunch will be served immediately following the presentation in which the carnival festivities will take place. The carnival will feature fun games, great entertainment and delicious food.
