AURORA¸New York (August 3, 2011) - As President Obama pushes for domestic job creation, many American manufacturing companies continue to leave the US for cheaper material and labor costs. According to the New York Times, in the 1960s, the United States produced 98 percent of its shoes. By 2009 we were importing 90 percent of them. While many see the moving game as the price of doing business in an international market, there are still some American companies who refuse to take part.

Small business owner, Dave Binns, is firmly committed to staying put. His internationally known handmade leather shoe company, the Aurora Shoe Co. has been proudly producing American sourced footwear in Upstate New York for the past 20 years. “We don’t just make our shoes here, we are also committed to using all American materials” says Binns. Over the past year Binns has driven to meet with two of his largest suppliers. The Horween Leather Company, located in Chicago, is one of the oldest continuously running tanneries in the United States. Their leather is well known in the shoe industry and is also used by the NBA and NFL for top of the line sporting equipment.
While supple leather is important in handmade shoe production, a good sole is essential as well. Vibram, a company that is currently on trend with its patented 5 Fingers footwear, produces soles for many top performing shoe companies. The Evaflex Vibram soles used by the Aurora Shoe Co. are produced by the Quabaug Corporation in North Brookfield, Massachusetts, a half day’s drive from Aurora.

There are myriad ways to cut costs in manufacturing, but for Binns it’s all about producing items of quality, “You can go out and find a pair of shoes anywhere.
