One of the most popular destinations for tourists when they visit Rome is Vatican City. The Holy See is an independent European state ruled by the Pope and the Catholic Church. It has a surface of 0.44 kilometres square and is an enclave of the city of Rome. For this reason, sometimes it is difficult to think of Rome and Vatican City as two different, separated entities. It is the smallest independent state of the world for population and territory and it can be found on the right side of the Tiber river. The heart of the city is the huge square which lies in front of St Peter’s Basilica, with its big cupola, so well-beloved by Romans and visitors coming from all the world. Many song’s lyrics have been written taking inspiration from St Peter’s cupola and many poems mention it. People that can afford to buy an apartment and see the Basilica from their balcony are extremely lucky and privileged. For this reason, many opt for renting a holiday apartment in Rome city and enjoy the vision of the cupola from their windows for at least some days.
Vatican Museums and the Vatican Apostolic Library deserve to be visited and appreciated for its extraordinaire architectural and artistic structures that can be observed in their insides. The price of the ticket for the museum is 14€ and often there is a long queue to access it, but the price and the wait is definitely worth while.
Among the pontifical palaces, the Sistine Chapel stands out with its painting of Michelangelo and the rooms, the loggias, the papal apartments decorated by Raffaello. Several artists and architects worked and left their marks in the Vatican buildings, amongst them Bramante, Michelangelo and Bernini.
One of the latest film that reproduce stunning images of the Vatican is “Angels & Demons” is based on Dan Brown’s famous novel. Certainly many people were attracted to the Holy See after watching the film or after reading the book. They have not been disappointed.
