FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Columbus, Ohio, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) November 17, 2011 --At the Cannes Film Festival this past May, world-renowned film director Lars von Trier fumbled a Hitler joke at a press conference. This led to a misunderstanding, prompting the press to jump to the conclusion that von Trier is a Nazi sympathizer. Cannes, in an effort to preserve their image of free expression, banished von Trier from the festival. The irony became even more pervasive when the French government recently pressed charges against von Trier for violating a law that prohibits the justification of war crimes.

For a story that represents a clear-cut case of free speech, it’s gone largely unnoticed. But a podcast called The Brazen Heads is taking up intellectual arms. They’re boycotting all celebrities who haven’t defended von Trier, yet who signed the Roman Polanski petition two years ago.

“If a celebrity is politically-minded enough to sign a petition for Roman Polanski, then they’re politically-minded enough to defend Lars von Trier. If they don’t, then it’s safe to assume that they only care about free speech when it makes them feel warm and fuzzy inside. We at The Brazen Heads think that’s lame,” says Mark Derian, co-host of The Brazen Heads.

The Polanski petition points out that "by their extraterritorial nature, film festivals the world over have always permitted works to be shown and for filmmakers to present them freely and safely, even when certain States opposed this." Such a defense, claims The Brazen Heads, applies more so to Lars von Trier than to a man accused of drugging and having sex with a 13-year-old girl.

Derek Bronish, the other half of The Brazen Heads, adds: “People in America cry wolf about free speech too often. But Lars von Trier didn’t shout ‘fire’ in a crowded movie theater. He's a non-native English speaker with a stuttering problem who was talking extemporaneously in a high-pressure situation. Even if none of these mitigating factors existed, I would still defend the artist's rights above all. This is the most definitive violation of free speech that you will see, and the French law, which suppresses discussion of the darkest character in European history, actually embodies that same dictator's utter disregard for basic human rights.”

Since no one has come out to defend Lars von Trier aside from Kirsten Dunst, the star of his most recent film, "Melancholia," then everyone who signed the Roman Polanski petition is in The Brazen Heads’ crosshairs. In addition to petitioning the White House, Derian, Bronish, and their loyal fans are avoiding all movies, plays, and products touched by the Polanski petitioners until they publicly defend von Trier.

Bronish puts the issue in perspective: “This isn’t about taking down Hollywood or Cannes. I just want to be able to sleep at night. We at The Brazen Heads strongly urge all freedom-loving individuals and organizations to recognize the gravity of this issue, do their part, and get a good night’s sleep along with us.”
