Today’s active Baby Boomers view age as a mere number. According to a Baby Boomer Survey by Del Webb, Boomers feel much younger than their actual ages. They found that, as age increases, the gap between many Boomers’ real age and perceived age expands. Why do some Boomers feel younger than their chronological age? Reasons for this “fountain of youth effect” include a positive mental attitude, happiness and a good sense of humor.
Happiness and a positive mental attitude can be attributed to maintaining close relationships with family and friends. In a study conducted by Evercare, ninety-five percent of respondents indicated that “Staying close to family and friends” an important ingredient to the secret to healthy aging.
Americans are on the move and that can make it tricky to nurture connections. According to the U. S. Census Bureau, fourteen percent of U.S. residents move annually. So, how can Boomers stay in touch and cultivate those important relationships?
More Boomers than ever are embracing technology, so communication venues such as email are old hat. Social Media websites such as Facebook and Twitter usage among Boomers is on the rise. We know that people are looking for creative ways to convey their appreciation, congratulations or to celebrate a loved one's milestone. When e-communicating isn’t intimate enough, sending something through the mail so that the recipient has something to physically hold is a good option.
There are many choices when it comes to mail order gift-giving. Typical mail order gifts include flowers or gourmet treats while some of the new trends include “techy” or eco-friendly products. One of the new mail order companies, Sock Grams, is gaining recognition as a resourceful, innovative way to send personal greetings that won't break the bank. It’s a fun little package for those with a good sense of humor and those that want to send a little hug to their loved ones across the miles.
A Sock Gram is exactly what it sounds like: a gift-wrapped package containing a card, personal greeting, pair of novelty socks, hats, mittens or toys - and an added treat, gift-wrapped and delivered right to the recipient's mailbox.
As one customer put it; “Sock Grams has been a great gift for me to send to friends and family. My girlfriends and I are watching our figures, so we don’t want candy or cookies and, at our age, we have all the little gadgets we need. Sending these to my grandkids has been fun. They love getting mail and I love getting notes from them with pictures of the socks and hats I’ve sent them. We’ve all gotten a good giggle out of it.” Kathryn P.
Tapping into the “fountain of youth effect” and boosting one’s happiness by fostering those important relationships can be work. Living apart from family and friends can be difficult, but staying in touch is easy.
