The Hidden Cost of Visiting Italy
Alex Roe of BlogfromItaly.com is running a campaign to sensitize tourists driving in Italy to the growing problem of fines issued for entering restricted traffic areas.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) April 13, 2010 --
Milan, Italy. More and more tourists are receiving fines every year for unwittingly driving into limited traffic zones in Italy, notes Alex Roe of author of BlogfromItaly.com, a website about Italy.
In order to sensitize tourist drivers to the problem, Alex Roe is broadcasting information via social media such as Twitter, Facebook, and Friendfeed to help drivers avoid fines.
Often drivers of hire cars in Italy receive more than one fine, the total amounts of which can be upwards of €200. The settlement of these fines can add considerably to the expense of a holiday, and settling or appealing the fines is not straightforward.
Back in 2006, Alex Roe wrote an article on the issue of Speeding and other traffic fines in Italy. Read more than 28,000 times, the article now has over 500 comments, many of which are by drivers who have fallen foul of Italy's limited traffic zones.
Alex Roe noted that some tourists vow never to return to Italy. By raising awareness of the issue and helping drivers avoid the fines, Alex Roe hopes people will continue to visit Italy and to discover all the country has to offer.
Italy's limited traffic zones are not always clearly marked, but they exist in towns and cities all over the country. Avoiding fines for entering one of these zones, which can mount up to hundreds of Euros, is not easy. Simply driving into one of these zones means the chances of being fined are high.
Whereas in the past only a few Italian towns and cities enforced these limited traffic zones, nowadays many more municipal authorities in Italy are creating such zones and installing automated fine-issuing camera equipment. Foreign drivers only learn of these fines a year or so later when notifications begin dropping though letterboxes.
The comments on Alex Roe's traffic fines article on BlogfromItaly.com, suggest that the Italian cities of Pisa and Florence are fine hotspots, and there is no sign that the number of fines issued is diminishing.
To help those coming to Italy by car, or those who might hire a car while in Italy, Alex Roe wrote a post entitled 'How to Avoid Fines While Staying in Italy'. Alex Roe says, “Anybody thinking of driving in Italy this summer must read this post, and watch out for Italy's plethora of restricted traffic zones.”.
“I hope that by using the communicative power of the internet and social media, I can help people avoid these fines, which tend to leave a very sour taste in the mouths of tourists visiting Italy.”, added Alex Roe.
