The Kia Optima Hybrid Is Officially the Most Fuel-Efficient Hybrid on the Market

Gerdes and Bernius certainly proved this on their journey. They traveled through a variety of climates and terrains, logging a total of 7,899 miles in their travels. Throughout their trip, which took them through all 48 of the continental U.S. states, they encountered freezing temperatures as well as scorching 118 degree heat, both in deserts of Nevada. Whether they were driving up the steep mountains of Flagstaff, Arizona at 7,300 ft. or found themselves stopping and starting in gridlocked traffic in larger cities, Gerdes and Bernius were able to optimize their fuel economy consistently. The Optima Hybrid is currently rated at 40 mpg on the highway, but they were able to exceed that by 60%. At one point in their journey, they were able to get as much as 65.8 mpg.

Gerdes has commented that he was impressed by the comfort of the vehicle during very long 12- and 15-hour drives. “This is a mid-sized car. This isn't a compact car. This isn't a sub-compact car,” he stated. Although he doesn’t expect average drivers to consistently achieve the same fuel economy, he still feels drivers can exceed the typical EPA estimates during normal conditions and highly recommends the Kia Optima Hybrid as a top choice for new buyers.
