Greenwich, Connecticut, March 8, 2010 - The Mom's Choice Awards® has named Poneasequa Goddess of the Waters by Stephanie Duckworth – Elliott, published by Wampum Books among the best in family-friendly literature.
The Mom’s Choice Awards® (MCA) is an awards program that recognizes authors, inventors, companies, parents and others for their efforts in creating quality family-friendly media, products and services.
Duckworth-Elliott, a member of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head Aquinnah, launched Wampum Books in October 2009 with the self penned young adult book Poneasequa: Goddess of the Waters. The story follows ten-year-old McKenzie Jones, a young girl who has not fully embraced her culture, and her journey to becoming comfortable in her own skin.
“To have my novel and Wampum Books recognized by MCA is truly an honor,” says Duckworth-Elliott. “At Wampum Books we’re dedicated to bringing quality literature to our most precious gifts, our children, and MCA has helped us to do that and we’re grateful.”
Wampum Books is a publisher that is deeply committed to the importance of discovering and publishing captivating, well-written and well-illustrated books, with a special emphasis on Native American authors. The company plans to contribute to the diversity of the world’s storytellers, introducing their writers to new and existing audiences and promoting a universal vision of the human spirit. Wampum’s next release reflects this promise with “American Indian Story” by GRAMMY nominee singer/songwriter, actress and author, Jana Mashonee. Co-written by Stephanie Duckworth-Elliott, the novel will be for the 9 – 12 year old young reader.
Parents, educators, librarians and retailers rely on MCA evaluations when selecting quality materials for children and families. The Mom’s Choice Awards® seal helps families and educators navigate the vast array of products and services and make informed decisions.
An esteemed panel of judges includes education, media and other experts as well as parents, children, librarians, performing artists, producers, medical and business professionals, authors, scientists and others. MCA judges are bound by a strict code of ethics which ensures expert and objective analysis free from any manufacturer association. The evaluation process uses a propriety methodology in which entries are scored on a number of elements including production quality, design, educational value, entertainment value, originality, appeal and cost.
