FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) August 30, 2010 --

MONTCLAIR, NJ The Montclair Arts Council and the Research Academy for University Learning at Montclair State University, will present a reading of work by older adults participating in a Silver Scribes writing residency on Wednesday, September 8, at 2:30 p.m. at the Little Falls Civic Center, 19 Warren St, Little Falls, NJ. An anthology of their writing will presented to all 11 participants, as well as to the Little Falls Township Council and the Public Library. Little Falls Town Councilman Bill Leiss, the coordinator of the residency, will serve as host. The reading is free and open to the public, with refreshments served afterwards.

The 2010 Silver Scribes Creative Writing Workshop was led by Meredith Sue Willis, a teaching artist from Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey’s Writer’s Project, who also teaches novel writing at New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies. Her novels and short fiction have been published by Scribner’s, HarperCollins, and West Virginia University Press, and others.

According to Willis, the writers in the workshop brought varying levels of experience, “but...they were all committed to participating, learning, trying the exercises I suggested, and to making the leap of faith that is required to put part of yourself into words for others to read.”

The Silver Scribes program is a creative writing initiative for older adults, with the goal of engaging elders in artistic creation as a means of promoting and fostering well-being. It is made possible by the Research Academy for University Learning at Montclair State University, The Wallerstein Foundation for Geriatric Life Improvement, The Montclair Arts Council’s Creative Aging Network, and Playwright’s Theatre of New Jersey.

The Montclair Arts Council is a non-profit organization dedicated to expanding and enriching arts and culture within Montclair. It supports local artists and arts organizations, acting as a catalyst for arts and cultural events, and seeking to enhance economic development through the arts. The Montclair Arts Council is funded in part by the Township of Montclair.
