The Vagabond’s House Inn is excited to announce a two day Creative Journal Writing Workshop with award-winning author, Heather Hummel and world-renowned artist, Richard Crispo . Because of Heather and Richard’s love for animals, a percentage of the proceeds benefit the Doris Day Animal Foundation – Duffy Day Life Saving Program (supported by the SPCA).

Journal writing is a form of expression that is seeing resurgence in popularity. Partially due to “Gratitude Journals” as put forth in all of the Law of Attraction based books and DVDs that are encouraging people to write down their goals, gratitudes, and desires.

The designs of journals have also come a long way since the simplicity of the ones our parents and grandparents wrote in. Nowadays journals are clothed in different and interesting outerwear. Yet, there is something about process and joy that goes into creating your own cover through art, and that’s exactly what this workshop invites you to do.

What also matters, just as with our own being, is the essence of the interior, what one writes on the pages within. And still, even with the rebirth of the art of journaling, there are journal writers who struggle with both the act and the art of journal writing. This experience will guide, inspire, and coach you down the path of successful journal writing.

In this two-day workshop, Richard Crispo provides a fun, exciting environment for the creation of the covers. As Crispo says: “My job is to make the personal universal and the universal personal.” Using watercolors, Crispo will work with participants to find the colors and designs that work best for their own unique personalities and styles.

Next, Heather Hummel, will guide students through the art of journal writing. With detailed how-to lessons, inspiring prompts, and a safe sharing (always optional) environment that helps students to understand the difference between “venting” and positive journaling writing to create the goals and dreams of their lives.

The classic act of journal writing is reinvented through this course. Old habits are challenged and new ones developed. The outcome for the students is not only new and in-depth knowledge on how to journal, but it guides them through how to break down the barriers of “writers block” and open up their minds to a world of creativity, appreciation, gratitude, and dreams.

Highlights of the workshop include:
• Creating personalized colors that speak to you for your journal’s cover
• Celebrates the written word in the most personal form.
• Explains the benefits of journaling the positive aspects of life.
• Gives suggestions for finding time in a busy day to journal.
• Explores the difference between journal writing and creating vision boards, as well as
how the two concepts work together beautifully.
• Integrates prompts that jumpstart students’ minds to prevent writer’s block.

• Explores the spiritual connection of body, mind, and soul and how journal writing
influences this relationship.

Additionally, this workshop provides students with guidance in the following areas:
• Writing the first, and often the most intimidating, entry.
• Creating and maintaining the habit once developed.
• Keeping a family journal (spouses and families can journal together).

Event Schedule:

Friday, January 14th

1 – 4 p.m. – participants will join in a guided artist tour by Crispo in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea. Crispo will discuss local artists, their works, and share their galleries. A wine and cheese reception at the Vagabond’s House Inn will follow.

Saturday, January 15th
10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Journal Cover Creation - taught by Richard Crispo
1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Journal Writing - taught by Heather Hummel
