When people speak of pole dancing, in any language, references to go-go and lap dancing used to be widespread. These days, many celebrities and everyday people use the activity as a way to keep their bodies in good form. Not so generally known, however, is the fact that this is an acrobatic craft used for circus performances within Asian cultures.
The dance doesn't just show off woman's assets, but it provides devotees with a visualization of the dancer's flexibility, stamina and sense of rhythm! Pole dancing also involves many, wonderful to watch, tricks. The handstand, butterfly and windmill tricks are common staples in any dancer's repertoire. The spin on the pole doesn't have to be excessive. Nor is it kept reserved. Pole dancing, in its entire delightful glory, is appreciated by people of all walks in life.
Pole dancers are increasing in population. Once, this was another term for exotic dancers. Now, both women in the industry and women who are lawyers can be coined as "pole dancers".
Word of mouth is assisting to spread around the various benefits and self-expression of this art form for women internationally, but specifically within The United States. Pole dancers are uniting online through information on classes, videos on performances, and sharing competition notes. The online community is also helping to banish the myth that this dance sport is for a reserved group of women.
Although some industry professionals are certainly pole dancers, not all pole dancers are industry professionals. Major online communities are setting up shop on the Internet to share tips, tricks and knowledge about the dance sport. Competitions for pole dancing involve specific titles for best "mount" and categories for particular pole dancing tricks, such as the Inverted Snake and the Ice Skater!
Long gone are the days when pole dancers used to go up against in contest in all topless competitions held at gentlemen's club as a way to advertise private dances to new customers. Some competitions were also held for armatures as way to market to couples! Now the dancers are battling for major prizes and honorable titles. Most competitions are based on tricks, athleticism and artistic expression. In the U.S. there is even a group called the US Pole Dancing Federation, which organises an annual event open to all women.
Despite if performed for competition, work or just plain exercise, pole dancers are some of the most athletic and durable women. The club pole isn't just for mischievous girls anymore! The Week magazine earlier this year did a feature information on "Little Spinners", a dance class for three year olds. The class is meant to aid toddlers with their balance. In the feature, the class' instructor, Carly Wilford, said she too was struggling against the old times judgment of pole dancing. "There is nothing dirty or wrong about it, it in fact helps children stay active and learn balance."
Presently, a simple search on Google will provide over two million hits for the title "pole dancing classes", and even more hits for "pole dancing competition". There is no doubt the dance sport is growing in popularity while the disgrace surrounding it fades.
