The Relationship Between The AA Slogans And The 12 Step Program

1

If you've ever been to a 12 Step meeting, you know what I'm talking about. Slogans. Everything is a slogan. œOne day at a time. œLet go and let God. œYou have to be sick and tired of being sick and tired. It doesn't matter what the event, there's a slogan to fit the problem. Am I right?

Now, some of you might be saying, œI know. I'm tired of hearing those slogans. But I'll bet more of you are saying, œI know. I'm tired of hearing those slogans, but they helped to save my life. Yes, the slogans seem to get old after a while, but for those who are in good recovery, they recognize that the trivial slogans make the program work successfully. They also understand that often, we need to hear these slogans hundreds of times before we really hear them in a way that means something to us.

It's very common to hear others in a 12 Step meeting say they have been coming for many years, and hearing the same slogans week after week. Yet one week, someone says the slogan in a way that is different, whether it be the context, their delivery, or the tone of the speakers voice, something is different and it's heard in a manner that changes everything.

All 12 Step programs focus on one central theme: recovery. What many people don't know is that it isn't all about drug addicts and alcoholics. Many programs focus the recovery of addictions to gambling, sex, pornography, eating, and the most surprising to many, an addiction to the addict. Yes, there are all kinds of addictions, and a program for each person; one can find their own path to recovery.

When you hear the 12 Step slogans, there will inevitably be many you can't accept. There's even a slogan to address that problem”Take what you can accept, and leave the rest behind. This is perhaps the most important slogan of all. If you throw away all the slogans you can accept with the ones you can't, you'll lose the opportunity to grow in your program and find recovery.

If you're looking for happiness, if you're looking for peace, if you're looking for serenity, begin with a slogan that I personally love”If nothing changes, nothing changes. Make the change in your life that will make the change in you.
