The Salvation Army of Southern Nevada, Nevada Women’s Philanthropy Set to Start Refurbishment of Emergency Shelter

Jan. 4, 2012 (Las Vegas) - The Salvation Army of Southern Nevada breaks ground on a $325,000 emergency shelter rehabilitation Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, 1 p.m. at The Lied Social Service Campus, 35 W. Owens Avenue, North Las Vegas, NV. This project will save a 12, 500 square-foot building which serves as homeless emergency shelter and a medical clinic. The funds for this project were awarded by Nevada Women’s Philanthropy (NWP) in its 2011 grant.

When complete, the emergency shelter will have a new roof and greatly improved locker and shower facilities for the homeless. It will also make room for 20 more beds so the shelter can provide 7,300 additional bed nights annually. The Salvation Army currently has 106 shelter beds. Construction begins in January and is expected to be complete by April. The homeless will continue to be served during all stages of construction.

Nevada Women’s Philanthropy (NWP) has granted $2.1 million to 11 local non-profits since it was created in 2006. (www.nvwomensphilanthropy.org).
