In the martial arts world, there are styles developed for sport, there are styles developed for film, and then there are styles that are developed for the street. It is that last aspect that John Annunziata has focused on during most of his 28 year martial arts career. Having studied various styles and systems of martial arts, Mr. Annunziata, an 8th degree black belt in Japanese Kenpo, always felt that there was something missing. He studied Chinese Kenpo, American Kenpo, Muay Thai Kickboxing, and Ju-Jitsu, yet he found that in almost every art, there was something missing. "Traditional Ju-Jitsu is great for leverage, Brazillian Ju-Jitsu is great for submissions and Kenpo is an amazing striking art, but individually, they all lack what the other arts have. So people have had to study all of these different arts in order to be well rounded and yet they were still losing street fights and not knowing why. The reason is, too much information to recall and incorrect training". When you have all of this information in your head, and you need to react in a moments notice, a person will tend to freeze up and not recall anything at all, which frustrates the student who thought he or she was learning how to defend themselves for this very reason.

This concept of training in several different martial arts and not fully appreciating the individual martial art has stumped Mr. Annunziata for a very long time. He couldn't understand why people, himself included, would jump around from art to art. Then, one day, it hit him out of the blue. Combine everything that he has learned into one street combatitive art. Sure this has been done before, but most of those arts are still lacking in one or two major areas. It wasn't enough for Mr. Annunziata to just create yet another martial art, he had to add something to it that almost every other martial arts school out there doesn't have, ASRT or Adrenaline Stress Response Training to his already well balanced system.

The name of his system is Universal Street Combat Systems, an art that is purely for the streets and only incorporates the very best techniques of Kenpo, Ju-Jitsu, BJJ, Muay Thai Kickboxing, and Sambo. These systems, added with the adrenaline stress response training makes the student a well rounded martial artist and street fighter. How ASRT adds value to Universal Street Combat Systems is by placing the student in "real life scenarios". "We practice indoors, on the street, in allyways, at parks and behind buildings. Pretty much all over. We use vulgar language and do whatever we can to scare each other. At that point, when the adrenaline is really pumping through our veins, when our bodies are shaking out of fear, when we can't see the attacker because of poor visiability, that's when we attack. It's really amazing to see what a person will remember when they are pushed to their limits and that's why Universal Street Combat System's techniques are short, but extremely powerful". He goes on to say "grappling is a must to learn in this day and age, but what if you are being attacked on a street where there are pot holes, broken glass, and other obstacles, do you really want to roll around in that? Striking is great also, but what happens if someone wraps you up and takes you down, or, is an even better striker then you are? Universal Street Combat Systems covers all of that and more".

He admits that there are schools out there that cover the same aspect, but maybe not to the same degree. "There is a well balanced atmosphere between dojo training and street training, and I believe that it is important to have both". By using the very best techniques of several different systems, Mr. Annunziata believes his system, and the type of training incorporated is all a person will need going forward. It is martial arts for the 21st century and beyond. For more information on Universal Street Combat Systems or for seminars, e-mail Mr. Annunziata at advancingdragons@gmail.com.
