The Uptick in Retail Spending Could Be Bad News for Small Business
The National Retail Federation expects retail sales to rise this year, by the largest percentage in five years. But consumers remain extremely cautious about parting with their hard-earned dollars and if small business owners don’t seize the moment they
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) February 18, 2011 --
America’s largest retail trade group predicts today that retail sales will rise by four percent this year. That figure is greater than any retail spending growth since 2006 and is also greater that the average annual growth seen in a decade. And while the news sounds positive at first blush, the trade group also paints a picture of a very careful consumer.
Author Sandra Gehring says that small business owners need to move immediately to create their own news media victories. “As retailers become more aggressive while tax cuts and income tax refunds spur a little spending, it is imperative that any small business be properly positioned today. Literally, TODAY.”
In her new book; Breaking Your Own News…Using the Media to Spread Your Message and Grow Your Business! Gehring has put together a press and publicity game plan that can be implemented immediately by any business person. The challenge she says, is that once retailers and other businesses get wind of available consumer dollars they will begin to “suck up the media attention like so many press and publicity ticks!”
News coverage typically scores very high in terms of trust and believability so it is no surprise that Gehring adds; “when customers start to spend, they WILL spend on the goods and services they’ve heard about in the media. If you aren’t a person or a product they’ve heard about lately on the news, you will be left out in the cold.”
Gehring works with a large and diverse group of business and professional people on a regular basis to craft the messages that make the media pay attention. She teaches small business people the best ways to master the media coverage craft while the proverbial consumer spending iron is hot. She is available for interviews about small business, the state of the media and how to master D-I-Y press coverage.
