In a move that could encourage other banks to follow suit, says American Express Co. will permanently delete all monthly fees on its gift cards from This Week.

The announcement came just before the holiday season,and before new rules are scheduled to take effect next year that will require banks and retailers to reduce these costs.

American Express said the move was driven by customer feedback,not the regulatory framework,it is driven by Washington,said Alpesh Chokshi, president of Global Business Division of prepayment.

In recent years,the cost of gift cards have become a sensitive issue for consumers who inadvertently discovered the value of their donations have decreased over time due to maintenance or inactivity fees monthly or short periods of expiration.

Consumers have lost about 6 million last year from 6.5% of the $ 92 billion market fees for gift cards, expiration dates or unredeemed cards, said Brian Riley, research director at Tower Group, which is owned by MasterCard Inc.

However,this percentage is lower than previous years and is expected to fall further as more people try to squeeze every dollar value of the cards,says Riley.
