Typically, the best place for Bird feeders is in the open to provide food for the birds, but also for the enjoyment of bird watchers. The placement of the device and the kind of food offered would be the main attraction for any bird. It would be completely upon you to decide the device position and the variety of food as per different birds and their preferences. Platform feeders mostly have bird food or seeds like Sunflower, Millet, Safflower, Canola seed and Niger seed. These trays are not only used for ‘bird watching’, but provide the necessary nutrition for the birds. Bird lovers do not miss a single chance to capture the splendid beauty of the birds.
There are mainly four types of birdfeeders: Finch feeders, Oriole feeders, Seed feeders and Suet feeders. Among these, seed feeder happens to be the most common one. This form of feeder is available in different designs like hoppers, trays and tubes. Both mixed and sunflower seed are mostly used for such trays in order to attract songbirds. Some of the popular songbirds that come to hopper trays are chickadees, cardinals and finches.
There have been several defence mechanisms created by the manufacturers to deter squirrels and other small animals from coming close to the seeds. Some of the birdfeeders have a unique mechanism, which are very weight sensitive and can shut off the access to all the seed ports as soon a heavy weight is noticed.
Seed trays are also designed in other different ways. You will find them mounted on poles rather than trees as it is believed that squirrels are very poor in reaching the poles and pedestals. The simplest of all for squirrel proof tray is the tube-like feeder that is walled by a metal cage. Many Finches use this type of feeder. No wonder, these feeders would protect the food from wild and large birds. This type of feeder is designed of clear plastic tubes attached with metal or plastic caps, perches and bases. You can also choose hopper seed feeder and place it at your convenient position. It looks almost like a house that attracts a large variety of birds like blue jays, titmice, sparrows, cardinals and finches.
