Things to Look for in Cabinets

Some people want those pretty cabinets because they know that they are only going to use them for show. They won't be subjecting them to ordinary wear and tear. So, those cabinets will do the job nicely.
However, if you think that you will be using your cabinets on a daily basis, then the obvious choice is to invest in some good custom cabinets. But how do you know if they are good quality? Look for the following:

1. Are they particle board (pressed wood) or sturdy plywood with a nice veneer? (no knots or steaks)
2. Are the hinges secure and heavy duty?
3. Do the cabinets fit your needs (lazy susan, full extensions for drawers, doors open fully 180 degrees)
4. Is the front of the cabinet a solid wood? Is the face of the cabinet box solid wood?
5. If you have paneled doors, are they solid wood? (1/4" panels may be plywood but the rest is solid wood)
6. On raised panel doors, are the rails (the horizontal pieces) and the styles (vertical pieces) solid wood?

An experienced cabinet maker can explain all of your options to you: paint grade wood, solid woods for staining, etc. Go with a professional and ask to see some of his work. Check references. Do not go with the lowest bid. You are buying quality and expect to pay a little more for it. Many times your professional can offer suggestions to actually save you money, so his experience is well worth his price.
