On Thursday 8th December Edinburgh was hit by hurricane-strength winds and violent storms said to be the worst in a decade. Many schools, businesses and council offices closed early, sending employees home. However, ThinkMarketing were proud to say that the wind did not hold them back and the office stayed open! A source from ThinkMarketing said ‘We all managed to keep going and everyone got home safely at the end of the day, if a little windswept!’
The Met Office issued a red warning for central Scotland after air pressure across the Atlantic plunged late on Wednesday. It is thought to be the first time the Met Office has issued such a warning to take action for high winds rather than flooding or snow.
The phenomenon is known to meteorologists as a ‘weather bomb’; however a Met Office spokesman said it was officially described as an ‘explosive deepening’, caused when atmospheric pressure drops by 24 millibars or more in 24 hours. To give an example of the scale of Thursday's storm: air pressure fell by 44mb.
Millions of people in central Scotland were warned to stay at home and avoid travelling after 165mph gusts left thousands of homes without power, closing bridges, rail lines and roads. Edinburgh was not as badly affected as other parts of the country; about 60,000 people were left without electricity in pockets around Sanquhar, Dumfries and Falkirk after power lines were brought down by the wind. Ferries in the Hebrides were suspended and at one stage more than 60 train passengers were stranded on the West Highland line after it was closed down near Crianlarich.
A source from ThinkMarketing said: ‘We obviously feel bad for all those who were affected. It was certainly exciting here in Edinburgh but we were lucky enough for our days not to be too disrupted by the storms’.
ThinkMarketing hopes that the storms will stay away now and not return to disrupt Christmas travel!
