Some of the characters covered in this new book may be well-known, such as Brunel and the Stephensons. Some of the incidents highlighted may provide further insights into their characters – such as why Brunel led a private army into battle against an obstructive contractor. Then there is the tale of Charlotte Brontë’s brother, who briefly became a station master on one of the first railways, and the story of William Huskisson MP who died because of Stephenson’s Rocket. Other railway people who appear in Those Railway People might be less well-known – such as the young girl who operated a railway drawbridge over a canal.
‘I wanted to write book about railways that would appeal to everyone,’ observes G.T. Smith, who has always been fascinated by trains. ‘In the long history of our railways all these people had a part to play. They came from a variety of backgrounds and walks of life and their stories are sometimes sad or exciting or amazing, but they all have something to tell us about the history of our great railways.’
