Thru week 11, after 553 FBS 1-A match-ups, Auburn, Nebraska, Oklahoma St., LSU, Missouri, TCU, Oklahoma, and Alabama fill out the top 8 seed positions. A purely win-based process, whobeat.net builds a "ranking" in sharp contrast to the voter/concensus polls that seem more prone to discredit a team's value due to a loss than to reward based on the team's strength (not just quantity) of victories. All 120 teams play a part in determining their seed positions while simultaneously quantifying schedule difficulty. Much-hyped Oregon has moved up to#11 this week, but the Ducks schedule has been weak to this point (#83), and with no games of significant value remaining it may be impossible for them to reach the #1 seed even after the the bowls. Meanwhile, Auburn gets to play whobeat #7 Alabama this week , and #15 South Carolina in the SEC Championship game next week, and possibly a BCS Championship game. Simply put, an unbeaten Auburn may be uncatchable and will end up #1 at whobeat.net, easily-- even so with a loss.
At the opposite end of the seeding, San Jose St., Akron, New Mexico St.., Eastern Michigan, New Mexico, Memphis, Buffalo, and Wake Forest solidly hold on to the bottom 8 spots. And here is where the whobeat.net process allows you to play a little bit, and have some fun with outcomes. Click "what if" and perhaps make a currently unsuccessful team or your favorite team unbeaten. Then recalculate. Because this is a process, you are able to recalculate and see what might have been for any team. Thru week 11, if unbeaten, Wake Forest would be seeded #2, an unbeaten South Carolina would be #1, and unbeaten Notre Dame would be #2. You can reasonably predict that from now, for any team to end up the #1 seed, that team must have already reached a high seed position, and then beat the Auburn Tigers, Plainsmen, and War Eagles. Maybe Auburn's success can be explained by the fact they have Cam Newton and 3 mascots, which seems a bit unfair.
