Primary opponents pledge their word and their personal funds.

Pinehurst, NC - March 1st, 2010 -- ABTL is pleased to announce that Republican Candidates Todd Gailas and Frank Deatrich, both Republican challengers for election to the North Carolina 2d Congressional District, will execute their term limits pledges at 2:30 PM, March 5th, 2010, at the ABTL offices in the Theater Building, Village Green, in old Pinehurst. At the conclusion of the signing, light snacks and beverages will be served. The press and the public are invited.

The rising National tide of grassroots activism increasingly features out-of-the box and innovative approaches by candidates, which reject the Beltway culture of business-as-usual.

Mr. Deatrich and Mr. Gailas are opponents in the upcoming North Carolina primary race in May 2010. In a unique gesture of mutual respect and solidarity, they decided to underscore their belief in term limits, by taking a pledge to serve no longer than six (6) consecutive years in office, if elected, and by signing their pledges of self-imposed term limits in a joint event.

In so doing, they find themselves in the unusual situation of sharing a mutual plank in their campaign platforms. On Friday, both candidates will sign promissory notes pledging a significant amount of their net worth to back up their pledges. Should they default on those pledges by running for terms beyond the six-year point, the funds stipulated by them will be paid to their pre-designated charities.

Mr. Deatrich, candidate from Louisburg, NC, is a small business owner who, with his wife Ruth, raises Arabian horses. Having served honorably in the US Marine Corps, Mr. Deatrich then pursued a career in wildlife management, and holds an advanced degree in that discipline. He is running on a platform of restoring the American economic engine, which enables job creation and a return to prosperity. He is in favor of health care reform that positions and enables the free market to achieve targeted reforms, and that eliminates the Government from interference in the patient-doctor relationship. Mr. Deatrich has chosen the Sentinels of Freedom, a Moore County charity that assists wounded service men and women in the often-complex post-injury transition to civilian life.

Mr. Gailas, is a candidate from Cary, NC, owner of a car dealership, and has felt the effects of legislation that has undercut the small business sector. Even after the 2009 government takeover of major auto manufacturers, community banks continued to lend to sound automotive businesses. However, the government then declared the whole industry a 'toxic asset' and the US Treasury Department threatened to take over banks that continued to lend to those in the industry. That placed Gailas' successful business in jeopardy and cost 25 hard working North Carolinians their jobs. It also halted plans to create another 40 jobs at a new location. While in the process of slow recovery, Todd decided the only way to remedy these assaults on small business, merit, and entrepreneurship was to run for Congress on a platform featuring government reform and restoring the control of government to the citizens of the United States. Mr. Gailas, has designated the Raleigh Chapter of the Spinal Cord Society as his charity on his term limits promissory note. In addition, in oppositon to automatic Congressional pay raises while Americans are losing their jobs, he has pledged to donate the equivalent of 5% of his Congressional pay annually to the Society for the length of this time in office.
