Top-down action in the 2012 Jaguar XKR-S, arriving soon at Jaguar Naples

Fort Myers, Florida, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) November 27, 2011 -- It’s drop-top season folks, and what better way to enjoy the cooler climate than in this, the new Jaguar XKR-S Convertible. We love the feeling of the wind ruffling our receding hairlines, and now that sensation can be multiplied tenfold with this gorgeous cat.

Unveiled at the Los Angeles auto show, the XKR-S Convertible is of course the drop-top variant of the XKR-S Coupé, which we fell in love with earlier this year in Portugal.

Now, boasting a power-operated folding cloth roof (standard color is black, but take your pick from six optional hues) it takes just a press of a button and 18 seconds to remove. And when the top comes down, your jaw will be joining it. As for your ears, they’ll be treated to the glorious sound of the Performance Active Exhaust system once you get in and go. And boy, does it go...

The flagship convertible features an updated version of the quad-cam, all-aluminum supercharged petrol 5.0-litre V8 while the Roots-type twin-vortex supercharger boasts twin intercoolers. It produces a, quite frankly, bonkers 542bhp and 680Nm of torque — that’s 55Nm more than the XKR. Bolted to this unit is a six-speed paddle-shift automatic with Active Differential, sending the power to the rear wheels. They make for one heck of a double act. How does 0-100kph in 4.4 seconds sound to you? Top speed is a license-disqualifying, electronically limited 300kph. This is, in case you weren’t sure, Jaguar’s fastest ever drop-top GT.

Keeping you planted to the road when you mash your foot down in this 1,795kg beauty is an upgraded suspension. It gains a redesigned aluminum front steering knuckle and revised rear geometry, and stiffer springs and dampers keeping it 10mm closer to the ground.

It’ll cut through the air thanks to all the aggressive-looking functional aerodynamic bits and bobs such as a carbon-fiber front splitter, side sills and rear valance.

We love the dramatic front end with that new bumper design incorporating a lower and wider air intake, while the carbon fiber diffuser at the rear is a sight to behold. It helps reduce lift by as much as 26 per cent, keeping this cat pinned to the tarmac. The 20in lightweight forged Vulcan design alloys and eye-catching red brake callipers look fabulous, too.

You can spec the new XKR-S Convertible in a choice of six colors. The one pictured here is Polaris White, but if you know your motorsport history, the only paint you should want is British Racing Green.

“Taking the track-orientated ethos of the XKR-S Coupé and applying it to a convertible is very exciting. There is a real spirit and thrill to driving with the roof down and in a car capable of these speeds that is going to be exaggerated to create a very dramatic and special experience,” said Ian Callum, Jag’s director of design. We reckon he might have more than a valid point there.

Inside, the drop-top XKR-S boasts 16-way adjustable sports seats finished in carbon leather, with increased support for driver and passenger when you really cane it. The multifunction three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel and metal pedals are really fetching. The gloss black center console is a classy touch to what is, without question, a classy car.
