Translation industry steps up a gear

The translation and interpretation industry is one of the most significant and lucrative industries in the business services sector. But the importance of high quality translation is often overlooked, simply because companies do not understand the translation process and the difficulty of accurately translating any document. This has led to many companies unknowingly receiving poor quality translations with low levels of accuracy.

Veritas Language Solutions Ltd. was started in 2009 with the aim of providing a high quality translation 100% of the time. The company’s directors, Rachel Bryan and Sharon Stephens, realised that the translation industry generally has very low standards. They saw an opportunity to make it more quality-driven and provide an intelligent and more accurate service. In every aspect of Veritas, they endeavour to maintain a culture of honesty (Veritas means ‘truth’ in Latin), quality and an essential ‘personal touch’.

The company’s commercial director, Sharon Stephens, says “most translation companies are run by business-minded people with a history in marketing or finance, but not a thorough understanding of the intricacies of translation. Rachel and myself both have a first class degree in translation and so we understand what needs to be done to provide the best service possible.”

Unlike many other companies, Veritas only allow their staff to translate into their native languages like Spanish to English Tranlators etc and use translators who are living in the relevant country. This ensures that their work is kept consistent with local cultural values. Their sister company – Veritas Talk, a multilingual call centre service, also only uses operators who are native speakers of the relevant language. Everyone knows how frustrating it is trying to deal with an operator who has a barely intelligible thick foreign accent! Veritas Talk aims to provide a service that is so authentic that foreign customers don’t even realise their call is being answered in the UK.

Veritas also require their translators to have a degree in their field of speciality. Specialised translations such as medical or technical documents require an in-depth knowledge of the subject being covered and the translators need to be able to understand the meaning of what they are translating. Finally, Veritas ask for at least 5 years professional translating experience.

“Our translators are very highly qualified with extensive experience.” explains creative director Rachel Bryan. “We want every translation to be completed with intelligence, awareness and attention to detail, so that our level of service is unbeatable.”

Rachel is currently studying for a master’s degree in Translation with Language Technology and in doing so is maintaining the academic background of Veritas. Rachel believes that education is the key to success, and it is her deep understanding of the translation industry and her passion for what she does that has allowed her to identify the areas in which other companies fall short. It is this awareness that has led her company to success. Her current research on terminology harmonisation, second language acquisition and pharmacological term formation will help Veritas to provide a more accurate and specialised services like Financial translations, Commercial translations, Language Interpreting Services, Technical Translations and more, with a deeper understanding of their customer.
