Many people have been affected by traumatic events in their lives. These events for many are indelibly recorded in their memories in sights, sounds, feelings and other ways subject to being activated years later. Sounds, sights, feelings or other triggers in their environment can trigger anxiety, panic attacks or depression or other feelings or thoughts with the person believing that these occurred for no identifiable reason. They can feel crazy or unsure about themselves and don't know why.
Trauma and PTSD- Need for a New Model of Treatment
Welcome visit Our WebSite:
http://harbor-crest.com In my model of treatment trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, PTSD, are not pathology but an understandable reaction to horrific events. They are learned conditions, reactions to horrific events, that are meant to help ourselves through, but create difficulties later. When such an event occurs we often wish to forget it, deny if ever occurred and try to forget about it, not talk about it, not feel it. It is similar to having a storage tank that we put memories and, feelings in so that we don't have to feel them. As other events occur or get triggered we put them in as well. At some point the contents become under such pressure that they leak out creating anxiety and depression without the person knowing why.
The therapists role is not to dig, or try aggressively to open the tank and create a mess but to create a safe environment in which the client can choose to open the tank a little at a time, or just let up to the surface what is ready to emerge knowing that together both client and therapist can handle it.
Frequently clients have come from other therapists who have been in therapy but have not learned about their condition, made connections between triggers in their present and events in their past leading to their symptoms or have never been given tools to help them improve. When a diagnosis of PTSD has been given, it has often been done without education about the condition and what to do about it. Therapists may have not been trained about the condition and its treatment. They may be afraid or uncomfortable resulting in avoiding the topic or addressing it minimally. These may occur in addition to the avoidance of the issue the client may have as well.
For these reasons I will be publishing or posting two sets of articles and videos; one for individuals who have been traumatized, the other for therapists. Videos will be available as soon as I can technically do so. Questions can be addressed to me at trauma@harbor-crest.com or trauma@virtualgastricband.us .
