Treading Ground Webcomic Eschews Mascots, Zaniness

(Free-Press-Release.com) February 2, 2010 -- Long-established reality-based webcomic Treading Ground has traveled a bumpy road in its more than six years of existence, but comic creator Nick Wright reports he is now updating weekly until the story is finished.

"I've fought off B.S. art funks for years, but lately I've realized that if I'm not doing something creative, I'm not really happy. I still have a story to tell with Treading Ground, so I figure let's finish this."

Treading Ground is a full-color webcomic about 21-year-old Nate Ashborne, who splits his time between putting up with his supermarket job, trading barbs with his roommates, and waiting for life to no longer suck. His life is further complicated when he meets Rose, a remarkable high school girl who is just a little too open about sexuality.

The comic is a rarity among webcomics in the way it keeps itself entirely grounded in reality. Most of the characters are composites of actual people from the author's life and past, and nothing happens in the comic that couldn't happen in real life. There are no mascots, no zany adventures, and no breaking of the fourth wall.

Wright explains, "I'll depict something the characters are talking about every now and then for comedic effect. But for the actual story, I think putting in supernatural elements, random celebrities, or technology that doesn't really exist is a bit of a crutch. You can still have a great comic without fighting vampires with Mr. T and a narwhal, and it's easier to identify with."
