FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) March 15, 2010 -- Boonton, NJ – (March 15, 2010) -- Two new studies suggest that long-term use of bisphosphonates may be associated with unusual fractures of the thigh bone. This research, combined with concerns about other side effects that include painful jaw problems called osteonecrosis, has led many patients to look for treatment alternatives.

"Bisphosphonates are a good first start," said study co-author, Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser, a professor of orthopedic surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. "Used beyond a certain point, yet to be determined, they may actually be bad."

What other options are there for osteoporosis patients to consider when seeking treatment?

Dr. Warren Levy, Ph.D., CEO and Founder of Unigene Laboratories, reminds patients that, “the important thing for patients to remember before changing or starting any drug regimen is to weigh efficacy, potential side effects and safety risks in light of all of the available data.”

One option for osteoporosis treatment worth considering is calcitonin-based products.

Calcitonin-based products have been used to treat osteoporosis for more than 35 years with very few side effects and can be taken by patients with any other medication. This is an important feature for elderly patients. Nasal calcitonin products have been shown to decrease fracture risk by 40 to 60 percent and also help maintain proper bone density. Calcitonin is rapidly cleared from the body and restores bone resorption to pre-osteoporotic levels, preserving bone microarchitecture.

Calcitonin is a naturally occurring hormone that helps the body regulate calcium levels. Calcitonin-based products provide patients with a more natural alternative for osteoporosis. Additionally, the products have a long history of safety with no major side effects.

“Minimizing side effects and maximizing bone health should be everyone’s goal. While bisphosphonates have helped many patients overcome the challenges of osteoporosis, we should certainly provide patients with information about all of their choices for treatment,” say Dr. Levy.
