There are many different face shapes. Most classification patterns have four or six basic shapes, including oval, round, square, heart (or triangular), and sometimes oblong and rectangular. Depending on the configuration of features, each of these face shapes has the potential to be beautiful, but for many people face shape can be a source of anxiety.
Square face, or Masseteric Hypertrophy, is a syndrome when the masseter muscle in your cheek becomes enlarged due to excessive use due to teeth grinding, habitual chewing, TMJ or misaligned jaws. The clinical condition is very rare, but many people are unhappy with their face shape, especially women who are born with a larger masseter muscle and broader jaw line so they naturally have a square face, which is perceived as a more masculine face shape.
Styling a Square Face
Many people do not find their square faces to be attractive and wish to take action to reshape their facial features. People who feel their face is unattractive are first encouraged to try wardrobe choices that help the features of your face to achieve a more pleasing balance. One way to bring balance to a square face is with glasses that can soften the angles of the face and add width to the upper part of the face, contributing to a more feminine, heart-shaped or oval appearance.
Another way to improve the appearance of a square face is with a choice of hairstyle. Hair that is wavy or curly can take away from the angular appearance of the face. Layer cuts also offer texture and softness, and hairstyles that add height to the crown help to elongate the face.
Feminine, soft-brimmed hats are also good for square faces. Wide and upturned brims are also good for softening a square face.
Cosmetic Treatments for Square Faces
However, if you are unhappy with the results of trying to work with your square face, you might consider cosmetic treatments to improve your appearance. There are two types of treatments: surgical and non-surgical.
For a permanent solution to your squared jaw line, jaw reduction surgery and jaw shaving surgery have been traditionally used. These methods give the face a more slender and feminine look.Jaw contouring can give great results, but the cost is considerable. It involves significant pain, has a long recovery period, and a relatively high risk of serious surgical complications.
However, most people prefer less pain and minimal to no downtime, so they turn to non-surgical treatments for their Masseteric Hypertrophy, like BOTOX® Cosmetic injections. BOTOX® Masseteric Reduction uses a side effect of BOTOX® Cosmetic injection to reduce the size of the masseter muscle. Continual injections into this muscle cause it to atrophy and reduce in size.
