Trevally are a sandy bottom inhabitant and are usually found around reef and low broken foul areas and is often taken near rocks such as the Nine pin a small rock that juts out at Whatipu beach Auckland the right hand side of this rock has yielded many big trevally the biggest of mine being 9 and a half pounds on a salted pipi bait.

Trevally can be found lurking just beyond the breakers.With dawn and dusk with a rising tide being the best times. They are often a shy fish but some have found that they are attracted to an area by fireworks as unusual as that sounds.

If King Fish are renouned as the street fighter of the sea then the Silver Trevally is the Ninja!They'll approach the bait with stealth and a decent one will bust off a lapser as quick as samurai sword strike. It is related to some exceptional fighting fish such as the Giant Trevally and bluefin trevally. They truely are an excellent fighting fish on light tackle and make good eating. (Bleed fish on capture and put on ice to produce best flesh.)
Deep, close in beach gutters, and run outs with white water are good locations to find these fish as well as off rocks. Traces up to 60 cm long can be used to attract these greedy feeders. Smaller trevally travel in shoals but again the larger trevally are fewer in numbers.

Trevally have a soft mouth and care must be taken not to tear the hook free when playing the fish. Making them a dificult fish to land, especially when in the surf due to the back wash of a receding wave.A light shock absorbing rod tip with a strong spine is a definite plus when targeting these fine fish.
