Tuberculosis diagnosed within 45 minutes directly from sputum

The bacteria is growing more resistant every day. This potential threatening disease needs fast and cheap diagnosis to limit the transfer to other people.

The conventional methods of diagnosing Tuberculosis are X-ray photo’s, a smear of sputum in combination with a microscope and culturing (growing bacteria). When Tuberculosis is diagnosed with x-ray photo’s or a smear. It always requires culturing validation. Tuberculosis culturing takes 2-6 weeks to validate the prior diagnosis. After the 2-6 weeks, the treatment can begin.
With the newly developed method, it takes only 45 minutes to diagnose.

Erwin Kaal, who has developed the method, used it on several patients and came to the conclusion that the method is capable to be as good and outperform the conventional methods.
The results and findings were published in a scientific paper which was published in 2009.
