(For immediate release – January 5, 2012) The DAC Gallery is proud to host a solo collection of new works by mixed media artist, Ty Pownall, as its first exhibition of 2012.
Ty Pownall’s sculptures reference a theoretical future based on the trajectory of current urban growth. His methodology is based on the view that the man-made is irrevocably intertwined with the natural world, and thus eschews a simple “man vs. nature” narrative. The Los Angeles landscape heavily influences his sculptures; the hill-like forms created by buildings, the vein-like transit infrastructures, and the radio towers posing as faux trees. Our usages of the natural landscape – whether we yield to it, dominate or imitate it – are conceptually provocative to Pownall’s process.
Using collected synthetic debris ranging from found demolition site materials, to the detritus of his own kitchen trash, Ty Pownall’s sculptures function as visual models of what he envisions and what we understands as “natural”. His work can be best understood as a mirror image of our surroundings: an ongoing trajectory ripe with amalgamations of the organic and synthetic.
An opening reception will be held Thursday, February 9th from 7-9pm, in conjunction with the February 2012 Downtown ArtWalk. The DAC Gallery’s regular business hours are: Monday – Friday, 8am – 3:30pm or by appointment.
Ty Pownall received his MFA in sculpture from Claremont Graduate University. He is an adjunct professor of fine art sculpture at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.
