Alastair Galpin of Auckland, New Zealand has today revealed his latest world record attempt - a sculpture in the shape of a rugby ball, made from 19,205 bottle caps.
He's never soldered a joint in his life, but he tackled this project by personally doing 37,000 solder joints; the total tally is higher. After 18 months of pain-staking working, including more than 1km of solder wire, and over 3,500 hours work, the completed sculpture has now been unveiled to a world-wide audience, complete in custom-built display cabinet.
The sculpture has been based on a design licensed by Gilbert Rugby, the official match ball suppliers for the Rugby World Cup 2011, and measures some 2.4m x 1.6m. Over 130 people have helped to make this dream a reality, with age ranges from 11 to 86. The iconic sculpture is available for hire and promotion of events and companies, with details appearing on Alastair's website - WorldRecordChase.com.
As well as needing to learn new skills in order to complete this world record attempt, challenges along the way included the tight licensing laws which exist in New Zealand to protect the brand for the forthcoming Rugby World Cup, as well as health and safety issues relating to working with molten solder and a project witness who managed to drive over 400 carefully prepared bottle caps!
You can read more about this sculpture and the quirky stories behind Alastair's other world records, on his website: www.worldrecordchase.com/achieved-records.html
Alastair's previous world records include the record for the furthest distance to blow a malteser with a straw (11 metres 29.5cm) and the Loudest Clap (an amazing 113 dbA). He now has his eyes set on raising sponsorship to help him attempt yet more world records, including challenging the record for the world's fastest furniture, with the aim of raising the profile of the Auckland Down Syndrome Association (ADSA).
Notes to Editors:
This world record attempt is subject to ratification by Guinness World Records™.
