University of Birmingham fosters research collaboration with Indian Institutions

Professor Peter Byers, Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Birmingham University, said, “The University of Birmingham is proud to be associated with India and to be able to make available its unique and international quality offerings at all three – the undergraduate, post-graduate and research - levels for mutual benefit. An international campaign ‘Birmingham: solving tomorrow’s problems today’ aimed at addressing key challenges facing the modern-day world shall highlight leading research strengths and academic expertise in the areas of global health, environment and security. It demonstrates how work at the University of Birmingham impacts the lives of people worldwide. The campaign themes focus on tackling Cancer, healthy ageing, sustainable transport, environmental pollutants and resolving conflict.”
Research focused on combating obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease is a growing area of development at the University of Birmingham. The delegation shall foster research collaboration with institutions in India to confront the obesity and diabetes epidemic threatening South Asia and the world. Researchers from University of Birmingham are helping to shape and plan the cities of the future focusing on the restructuring of cities in response to urban insecurity, climate change, natural disasters and international terrorism. Professor Jon Coaffee, Director of the University’s Centre for Urban and Regional Studies, is meeting peers at universities in New Delhi to explore opportunities for collaboration to address India’s current and future infrastructural challenges.
The delegation highlighted relevant research activities in Engineering and Physical Sciences and Life and Environmental Sciences. The College of Engineering and Physical Sciences is one of the largest integrated academic Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) units in Europe, and conducts a broad range of world-leading research, much of which is highly relevant to the Indian sub-continent. The College has attracted Government and industrial investment to establish, in collaboration with others, the Manufacturing Technology Centre focusing on advanced manufacturing.
The University of Birmingham’s engagement with India spans over 100 years. Birmingham has a number of research collaboration with several institutions across India: JNU, TERI, Institute of Dalit Studies, Indian Institute of Science, and College of Traffic Management that is helping to transform lives and to make a real impact on society.
