One of the most complicated tasks that interior designers and architects encounter is when designing rooms and buildings is conceptualizing precisely their project’s outcome when it is finished. Now, University of Missouri department of architectural studies has developed the iLab or also known as Immersive Visualization Lab that will help University of Missouri students visualize their designs more precisely. Assistant professor of architectural studies inUniversity of Missouri College of Human Environmental Sciences, Bimal Balakrishnan, says that iLab will be 1 of the selected labs in U.S. to permit undergraduate students a hands-on experienced using immersive 3-D technology to test and complete their projects in their design studio curriculum.

The University of Missouri iLab integrates 3 huge high-definition projection screens arranged side-by-side to provide 1 continuous, parallel viewing screen. Wearing unique “active shutter” eyewears, University of Missouri students are able to see their computer-generated interior and architectural designs in 3-D on the screen. The immersive effect of the huge screen gives the university students the impression of standing inside the building they created. Balakrishan says that the 3-D effect can be an essential tool for architectural designers.

The iLab also will offer a design collaboration setting, which will allow University of Missouri students to work jointly on design projects effortlessly. This setting will let university students link up project designs and computers on an interactive “smart board” creating a much easier environment for students working on elaborate design projects in teams. Balakrishnan says the cost of building for the iLab was lessened by half by designing & constructing the $85,000 iLab in-house.

Balakrishnan acknowledges the support and advice of staff and faculty from IEL or Immersive Environment Lab and the iCon Lab from Penn State University. He mentions that iLab is a part of a continuum of a desktop-based virtual reality method which Penn State started. For more information, contact Nathan Hurst, 573-882-6217, hurstn@missouri.edu.
