UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO - SSA HOSTS SECOND
URBAN AMERICAN INDIAN FAMILIES CONFERENCE
The University of Chicago, School of Social Service Administration, will host its second annual conference on Urban American Indian Families on April 2, 2011, marking the 50th anniversary of the important Chicago Indian Conference of 1961. The title of this year’s conference is American Indian Urban Families: Living Cultures, Education, Social Work and Policy.
This event brings together a distinguished panel of Chicago and national experts to discuss American Indian urban families and the challenges they face in accessing education and social services. and what social workers, educators, policy makers and others can do to help alleviate barriers. Panel members include; Dr. Lola Hill, Dr. Dorene Wiese, Louis Delgado, Ken Scott, Jolene Aleck and Georgina Roy.
Distinguished author and internationally known speaker, Dr. Donald Fixico, Shawnee, Sac & Fox, Muscogee Creek and Seminole, Professor, Arizona State University, will present the keynote address, “The Modern Indian from Relocation to Cities.”
The importance of oral history and traditional education and the influence of elders and tribal efforts to keep native languages alive in American Indian communities will be presented by speaker, Andrew Begay, Navajo, traditional flute maker and musician.
Dr. Dorene Wiese, White Earth Ojibwe, President of the American Indian Association of Illinois will present the Chicago Indian Elder Awards and a narrate a special American Indian music and dance presentation by the Black Hawk Performance Company led by Carlos “Zeke” Peynetsa, Zuni/Isleta. Spirit of the Southwest will cater lunch.
American Indian artisans will be present to explain the traditions of the spoken word and leatherwork, beading, regalia creation and carving.
