Valentine's Day: Coping with Addiction

Happy Valentine's Day. You hear everyone saying it, but what does it really mean? To most people, it means you have a special someone in your life that makes you smile every day. To others, it's a time of sadness because they lack that special someone. But all you have to do is look around to see that the special someone is in their face every day.

Often the people we want closest to us are scared to come near us because of our history with drugs and alcohol. Even if we are sober, they fear we will be right back in the middle of chaos and drag them along. What can we do to make them understand we want what everyone else wants: happiness and a life of contentment?

I'm sure that having been in the 12 Step program long enough to understand Step 1, you recognize that you are powerless over other people. This applies to romance as well as drugs, alcohol, and any close relationships. It's just harder to accept that you want to give someone something that they aren't willing to give back.

Friends often spend holidays together when they don't have a significant other in their lives. Valentine's Day is no different. Make plans with a special friend, one who means the world to you, and make them dinner, or go out for a special night on the town. Find your happiness and contentment from within, knowing that your friends don't make you shine; rather, they help to make you shine brighter.

This year, Valentine's Day is a day of overcoming that feeling of isolation, mentally and spiritually as well. It's all up to you. And you have the opportunity to make it a special day for someone else as well! Have a Happy Valentine's Day.
