Fort Myers, Florida, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) January 16, 2012 -- Vastu Shastra is the Vedic science of construction and decoration and not to be treated as an ancient myth. Buildings and homes were built to balance the elements observed in every day life in nature, to encourage the flow of positive energy and thereby assure health ,wealth and happiness.

The word Shastra means enlightened literature. The word Vastu ,meaning the manifest, is derived from the word Vastu meaning the unmanifest. Just like we see the moon present in the sky ,but when observed rising over a lake we see it's reflection in the lake, that is it manifest itself in the water. Similarly all things exist in eternal reality and then they manifest here in the material world of ours. The five elements of the Vastu Shastra are Air, Water, Fire, Earth and Space. The notion of space represents the vast vacuum beyond ordinary perception and symbolizes the power of an unseen force. It is thus a source of inspiration in Hinduism and Zen Buddhism.

The Five Elements of Vastu Shastra

AIR : The Vastu Shastra emphasizes the importance of fresh air (vayu) in homes and buildings. The rooms must have efficient air circulation. The element of air, often symbolized by white or color fabric, is also ushered into Indian interiors by using materials that emphasizes it's qualities-long, light ,sheer fabric that dances in the summer breeze.

FIRE : One of the principal deities worshipped by the ancient Hindus was (Agni), god of fire and fire is still sacred today. Fire is symbolized by the colors red, orange and gold and the most potent symbol of fire, the Sun is regarded as a special motif throughout India. Sun is said to ride in a chariot pulled by seven horses or deities. These seven deities happen to also be called the seven visible colors of the spectrum of Solar white light. Sun motif is often used in commercial buildings, exterior & interior walls and textiles and home furnishing like bedspreads, tapestries and wall panels.

WATER : Water (jala) is symbolised by the color blue, in all forms from the oceans to the water of the humble well. The flowing water is symbolic of the life and it's ups and downs. Marble fountains are a common site in homes and businesses especially hotels, malls and boutiques. One of the famous pattern we still see in hotels is the replica of the Char-Bagh pattern which has been there since centuries. This plan represents a grid of waterways in which intersecting lines represent the four rivers of life and the interaction of God and man. This pattern can still be seen in some Old Forts in Rajasthan and in hotels where it is seen carved out of marble slabs and usually placed in the lobby. Even Buddha statues most of the time are seen with a flowing water fountain in front.

EARTH : According to the Vastu Shastra, Bhoomi Poojan -earth worship is necessary before any construction begins. Earthy colors and textures feature Indian homes and are used on walls, furniture and ceilings. Walls are splattered with mud to keep the blistering heat at bay and objects crafted out of clay abound in homes throughout the country. Earth colors can be found in abundance in home decor like furnishing, wall hangings, tapestries, bedding and bunjara patchwork with mirror.

SPACE : Houses are small and very close to each other hence the need for the expansion of visual space. It's an art that developed over centuries. Walls are often punctuated with small windows, niches simple doorways and even mirrors. Open arches and filigreed screens between rooms demarcate sitting areas or split the room into sections.
