Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – Amid concerns over the national security of Mexico in lieu of rampant clashes between violent cartels and police, many Americans are thinking twice about taking a trip south of the border. Velas Vallarta, one of the most prominent resorts in Puerto Vallarta, is speaking out against the unfair generalization. “Our community here feels like a family,” says Ramon Bernal, Project Director at the Velas Vallarta Resort, one of the safest places to stay in Mexico, “Even at night, I feel confident and secure walking down the street alone. This is a friendly city.”

Bernal and others involved in the tourism industry are experiencing financial stings from events unrelated and far away from their simple homeland of Puerto Vallarta.

Much of the concern spawns from a statement the U.S. State Department released in April. In it, nine Mexican states are listed as potentially dangerous. One of these states is Jalisco, where Velas Vallarta and Puerto Vallarta are found. However, conflict in Jalisco is extremely rare and the closest it has ever occurred to Puerto Vallarta was hundreds of miles away. Though it keeps the interests and safety of the American people at the forefront, many agree that the statement goes a bit overboard. The vast majority of violence has transpired in the most northern edges of Mexico, near the border. “The trouble-makers just don’t come around here,” concludes Bernal.

Velas Vallarta, or any of Puerto Vallarta for that matter, has never been the site of a single American or Canadian victim of drug violence.

Local politicians of the Mexican city have a vested interest in keeping it safe, as tourism is the number one industry in the town. A special police force was created just to protect tourists and facilitate the safe tourism of vacationers at large. This helpful guard wears a specific, easy-to-see uniform and can be found across all parts of the town, especially those that are tourist hot spots, including Velas Vallarta, the safest Mexican resort.

Velas Vallarta, having shown itself to be one of the safest places to stay in Puerto Vallarta, is situated between the beach and downtown Puerto Vallarta. Velas Vallarta is renowned to travelers from the United States and around the world for its picturesque, traditional architecture, warm family environment and luxurious, all-inclusive extended-stay packages.
