Veteran dentist publishes children's book

(Free-Press-Release.com) March 14, 2010 -- (NAPERVILLE, IL)—Every boy knows the feeling. Strolling outside, he grips a piece of string, a balloon tied to the other end. The balloon hovers above the boy, trailing him like an obedient bird. And then it happens: Somehow, he loses his grip. He watches helplessly as his companion floats off into the sky. It grows smaller and smaller, a dot among the clouds, until it disappears forever.

What happens to that balloon? One Naperville resident has released a children’s book that answers just that question. Written and illustrated by Kaveh N. Adel, The Boy and the Red Balloon (CreateSpace; March 2010; Softcover: $11) tells the fanciful tale of an estranged balloon determined to reunite with his friend.
“It’s a story about never giving up,” Adel says. “It teaches kids, in a fun way, how to deal with the setbacks and triumphs of their lives.”
The book depicts one balloon’s journey home after he slips out of a young boy’s hand. Floating above the Earth, the balloon encounters black birds, white clouds, and blue skies. The simple color-coding is designed to help children develop vocabulary words and better understand their sensory surroundings. Eventually, with help from his mile-high friends, the balloon drifts back into the boy’s loving arms.

The Boy and the Red Balloon is the first in a series of books inspired by Adel’s four-year-old son, Kian.
“Just as much as I teach him, he teaches me,” says Adel. “I see the world anew, like a child. This book is an expression of that feeling.”

Adel, 36, has been a family dental practitioner for 13 years. The Boy and the Red Balloon is his first book, though not his first foray into the creative arts. As a child in Tehran, Iran, Adel immersed himself in art to cope with turmoil both political and personal. He watched as Iran transformed into an Islamic Republic and fought an eight-year war with Iraq. Meanwhile, inside the home, his parents’ irreconcilable differences resulted in divorce. And so Adel began drawing — to explore and understand life’s hurdles. His passion led him to study studio art at the University of Iowa before becoming a Doctor of Dental Surgery.
As part of his commitment to children and the sciences, Adel will donate 10 percent of the book’s profits to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Autism Speaks. He hopes The Boy and the Red Balloon and its donations enrich the lives of children, just as art enriched his life as a child.
