Even with the continuous advancement of music technology, vinyl record albums don’t seem to be going anywhere. According to Nielsen SoundScan, vinyl record sales have continuously grown over the last six years. Even with overall album sales dropping last year, vinyl numbers continue to increase. There are a number of reasons why vinyl seems to be making a comeback. Collectors are one of those reasons. With millions of record collectors willing to pay top dollar for an older album, the industry is being kept alive. There are also things like sound quality, tangibility, and nostalgia that seem to be keeping this format alive, and the industry happy.

Although classic rock is a popular, high priced seller for record collectors, new artists are also doing very well. The top 25 albums sold last year included everything from classics to new releases. The record industry has begun releasing new artists, mostly alternative, on vinyl as well as on digital formats. Labels are putting together special packages including things that are only available on vinyl. Many times, they will also include a free digital download with a vinyl purchase. This is not only attracting collectors, but also younger music fans.

Sound quality, tangibility, and nostalgia are all reasons collectors and music lovers are buying vinyl. With today’s digital downloads, music is compressed, which leaves you with poor sound quality. Music fans are also scooping up albums simply for great album cover artwork. People use the cover and the vinyl as artwork to hang on walls. Many people are also buying vinyl for nostalgic reasons. Young buyers are understanding more and more about creating an experience. Vinyl records continue to create memories with friends and family at any age.

There is no end in sight to the continuous increase in vinyl record sales. The industry is ramping up for another profitable year.
