Visit Iran - Are You Kidding?
Would travel to Iran top your vacation plans? It did for one single mom who took her two daughters to visit even though they have no Iranian heritage and didn't know a single person in the country.

Imagine this scenario – you and your two children love to travel. Since it’s a priority for you, you’ve set aside enough to pay airfare to anywhere in the world. Your vacation days are firm on the schedule and now it’s time to decide where to go. If you could list your top 25 destinations, would Iran be in your top 5? Top 15? Top 20?
If you’re like me, the truth is, Iran would not even make the list. Why is that? As a freshman at UCLA in 1980, I still remember Iranian Revolution. Islamist militants took over the American embassy in Teheran and held 53 Americans hostage for 444 days. It seemed we were daily treated to images of Iranian “students” burning American flags in the streets. I always wondered, “Don’t those guys ever study?” Have things changed since then? Well, let’s see. An Iranian/American journalist was recently accused of spying and held there, though later released. A couple of Berkley students were unfortunate enough to wander across a mountain border from Pakistan into Iran, and they are still being detained. It’s no secret our governments are still at odds, and over nuclear capability, no less. So yes, it’s safe to say Iran wouldn’t make my list.
Still, I’m curious about something. Does the government of Iran truly represent the people? What are their ideas? How would a visit look to children? These questions were actually answered by my sister, a single mom, and her two girls. Far more adventurous than I, Angelina Hart actually did travel to Iran with her two daughters Chantelle and Nikia to film what is now the fourth DVD of her series, The Little Travelers. Undeterred by the visa process and the fact that she needed to be accompanied by a “guide” at all times, Angelina now brings a rare glimpse into a country rich with history and a surprisingly gracious people. The DVD is narrated by the girls and moves along at a child’s pace, but nevertheless takes us on a cultural journey through the land that was the once center of the mighty Persian Empire. The architecture is stunning, to be sure. But more than that, the girl’s observations often show we may have more similarities than differences. Leave it to children to teach us that! If you have kids, the DVD is just plain fun as the girls learn about the different customs by pairing up with two Iranian girls – the countries’ youngest tour guides.
