VLC Media Player to be Released on iPod

(Free-Press-Release.com) September 17, 2010 -- VLC – famous for having a go at playing just about any kind of audio or video file one cares to throw at it – should appear in iPod some time this week, if it makes it through the often unfathomable approval process implemented by Apple.

The open source VLC Media Player has been tweaked to run on iPod by software developer Applidium. The outfit says the download will be free, and that patches will be passed back into the main VLC tree allowing others to create iPod software based on VLC's code.

Open source advocates are asking the public to write to Oracle CEO Larry Ellison to protest its damaging decision to prosecute Google over Java, writes The Register.

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) has also promised to gather information on prior art to attack the seven patents Oracle claims Google's violated in its implementation of Java on Android.

Meanwhile, the group has encouraged Google to take a "principled stand against all software patents" by fighting Oracle, rather than settling behind closed doors, as so often happens in such cases.

Broadcom has released its Linux 802.11n drivers as open source code: Drivers for several current chips are part of the full-source code release, reports WiFi Net News.

This may seem obscure for wide consumption, but it's actually a big market, the report says.

Versions of Linux are used on hundreds of millions of digital appliances, in which an 'embedded' form of the operating system is used; one designed to be limited and robust to carry out a specific set of tasks, like driving digital video recorder.
