The “Top Safety Pick” is the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s highest honor, and is awarded to vehicles that best withstand its rigorous tests. These include roof strength tests as well as front, side, and rear crash tests. It’s also worth noting that the “Top Safety Pick” award can only be given to vehicles that are equipped with electronic stability control as well as head protection airbags. In other words, to win such an award, a vehicle must be equipped with the latest in safety technology and still beat out the competition.
