You will learn how to identify a dogs “Optimal Functional Zone” ; maximising his energy and endurance, ensuring full expression and powerful controlled behaviour during his operational deployment.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) October 1, 2011 --
Whether your goal is Security, Law Enforcement or IPO this workshop will give you access into what it takes to get 100% from your working dog regardless of its application;. You will learn how to identify a dogs “Optimal Functional Zone” and then learn how to keep your dog in that zone; maximising his energy and endurance, ensuring full expression and powerful controlled behaviour during his operational deployment or sporting routine.
“I am attempting to breed and hence train those dogs that operate within a mental framework that bring natural capability regardless of environmental disturbance and that maintain or spring back into what I call an “Optimal Functional Zone”. These are the dogs that are robust and forgiving, maintain a clear head, and that seem to want to work forever. These dogs are rarely perplexed because they have and maintain an uncomplicated mind.
This “Function Zone” is what all breeders and trainers must be able to recognise, select for, experience and develop.. if we are to bring into this world better bred performance dogs. Then they need to understand animal learning coupled with thoughtful and humane training systems to enhance their natural gifted ability to be brought under stimulus control.
My focus in these workshops is to teach the principles that allow for such working dogs to come into existence through the complex process of breeding and the understanding animal learning. This is the only way breeders, handlers and trainers will be able to utilise the maximum potential from each and every “Quality Working Dog”
A Perspective on Protection Training
For 30 years, I have been observing many protection trainers and the results they achieve. From these careful observations and from discussions with many, I have discovered that the root of the confusion that most dogs seem to have is that they are unsure of what is expected of them, through what I refer to as the “training of dogs against their instincts” and the selection of dogs with either the “incorrect instincts” or with “drives that are in the wrong place”.
Consequently, I have long questioned the wisdom of conventional methodology and ultimately developed insights into protection dog training that will give trainers and handlers a strategy to get their dogs closer to a “drive fulfilled state” kept under stimulus control.
The result is a system that illustrates what can be accomplished when modern technology complements scientific learning theory paving the way for humane training methodology.
This protection dogs training philosophy has come about from countless hours of discussions simply because conventional beliefs did not make sense, and with careful consideration for the fact that we humans are limited in our understanding of true working dog behaviour. Too much emphasis has been place on wolf behaviour which is far outdated and has little relevance in working dog training. Yes there are key universal traits that are at the core of all dogs but we need to focus on the useful instincts to give us the results we need in optimum performance whatever our application.
We do not have the capability to truly understand nor feel what our dogs are going through during high levels of arousal that occurs when training dogs in protection. Hence I believe we need to increase our capacity to see what is really going on by equipping our training systems with additional tools such as scientific instruments that may give us real time data on what chemical changes are occurring during these moments of high levels of arousal and combining it with actual visual data of the said dog so that it can be used for future reference and training of all decoys.
I am currently investigating this with a behavioural university; however we all have a huge hurdle. One of which is, coming to agreement as to what is the correct or ideal display of protection behaviour to be used for future reference. After our weekend together I would love to hear from you if you can assist with this program. Please email me at info@vonforell.com .
Training a dog for protection work is unlike training a dog for any other type of work. I believe that most of us assume that protection work would be natural for most dogs, and that the training should, in fact, be simple. Although we may assume that protection training is natural for dogs, the reality is that without the right dog, a skilled handler and a decoy that understands working dog behaviour a successful outcome is seldom possible.
The handler’s task is to observe and read the dogs behaviour and the trainers must have an organised method of assisting the dog in recovering from any volatile state.
There is some irony though and that is volatility or correctly measured conflict can be beneficial to create more drive however this requires tremendous skill to see the benefits. The principles of training with correct doses of conflict require a team effort from both the handler and trainer with careful thought and foreword planning.
Another issue we face is that all books, videos, articles, and seminars about protection dog training are written, produced, and taught by people. Often, our human perspective is the biggest flaw in training. We want to actively show dogs, guide them, help them, coax them, or force them to do what we want them to do. Hence force seems to be main method of teaching. "I believe if you start with force it can be become a conditioned response from you and you will tend you revert to force when you are not achieving the results you believe you should be".
