Ask yourself why, when people already had normal weight loss with no diet, did almost everybody, in the late seventies and early eighties suddenly adopt one particular diet as a way of life? And how did they not notice they then began to get fat?
To say you can have a weight loss with no diet was not Interesting to people thirty years ago. The vast majority of people were slim and most never saw a reason to go on a diet.
There was no real public interest to change a food regime which people had been used to for eons. The medical profession showed no interest So unqualified people who called themselves Nutritionists, went ahead to design a diet that might improve people’s health.
Had they attempted to launch a diet at that time it would have been a dismal failure. But Timing Is Everything.
Few people would have seriously considered a diet just to improve their health. People felt healthy anyway and the majority of people did not need to lose weight. Health was simply not an issue.
The thing that gave almost instant recognition and credibility to Nutritionists, was the word cholesterol. Nutritionists were the people who brought it to public attention. It seemed as if they had made the discovery. People actually thought this was a new science.
Nutritionists achieved even more credibility when they revealed that most people showed dangerously high cholesterol readings. This put them in danger of heart attacks and strokes. No one thought to ask why there was not already an epidemic since people's diet had changed little for eons. You could say people were panicked into action.
It was in this climate that the nutritionists revealed their new diet, The Pyramid. Many will remember the poster. It was the diet you needed to have to cure your cholesterol problem. It required more than two thirds carbohydrate and it laid the foundation for food addiction and digestive and intestinal problems for all the years since then.
the excited Nutritionists and lab technicians had no clue that cholesterol requires two readings, one for the good cholesterol and one for the bad. The reading for the bad cholesterol gets deducted from the good cholesterol to get the correct reading. Instead the two readings were added together. This would not have happened had science been in charge.
It took years to discredit that diet. By then it had ruined many people’s lives. Make no mistake it still does. Just look at your shelves in the food mart. The Pyramid did not go in a blaze of publicity, it snug away with a whimper.
Nutritionists soon launched their new 'Fat free' diet. It preached that the fats you eat are the fats that stick to the body. Thankfully, that diet has also recently been discredited. This time many food manufacturers have chosen to ignore that.
There is no doubt most people would be better off had the old system of weight loss with no diet remained the norm. Chances are we would be a much slimmer and healthier nation today.
