http://www.petsforpatriots.org The central Austin clinic was founded in 1986 by Lewis Hanks, DVM, and for the past 25 years has held the prestigious American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accreditation. Since early 2011, it has served as a Pets for Patriots veterinary partner.
In December 2011 Dr. Hanks retired and sold the practice to Angie Whitworth, DVM and Debbie Faludi, DVM. Drs. Whitworth and Faludi will carry on Dr. Hanks’ commitment to caring for pets honorably adopted by Pets for Patriots members. “Dr. Faludi and I believe Pets for Patriots is a wonderful and uplifting program, and we are very excited to be a part of it. We cannot wait to meet the wonderful caretakers and their pets!”
Through its nationwide network of pet adoption and veterinary partners, Pets for Patriots makes pet ownership more affordable for military personnel, enabling them to enjoy the loyalty, companionship and unconditional love of a companion pet.
Every year, five to seven million animals enter shelters across America as strays, owner-surrenders or abuse or neglect cases. Mature pets, special needs pets and larger breed dogs are hardest to adopt out for shelters. These pets also share the highest risk for being euthanized, and are the focus of the Pets for Patriots program.
To qualify for Pets for Patriots’ program benefits, the honorably adopted pet must be a dog or cat two years old or order, a dog weighing over 40 pounds regardless of age, or a special needs pet.
“Our goal is to accelerate the adoption of harder-to-place pets that still have years of love and life to give,” says Beth Zimmerman, founder and executive director of Pets for Patriots. “With the simple act of honorable pet adoption, we can save two lives.”
West Lynn Veterinary Clinic’s Dr. Whitworth agrees: “Pets for Patriots’ focus on adult and at-risk pets provides a wonderful and much needed opportunity to animals whose chances of being adopted would otherwise be very slim. We also believe that is very therapeutic and rewarding for people to open their homes to such pets.”
Offered at no cost to its members, the Pets for Patriots program is open to individuals from any branch of the U.S. military, at any stage of their careers. Those interested must first apply at www.petsforpatriots.org, and provide proof of their military service, before adopting a qualifying pet.
Approval typically takes two business days, after which Pets for Patriots members may visit a program shelter partner to adopt their new best friend. Local partners include PAWS Shelter and Humane Society in Kyle, Texas which discounts its customary adoption fees by a minimum 10% and Austin Pets Alive!, which offers Pets for Patriots members a 50% adoption fee discount for any dog or cat more than three months of age.
