December 1,2011 - Children are known for their natural naughtiness and playfulness. Often, parents would be happy to see their child hyper and having fun exploring. But there are some children who are extraordinarily “hyper” that it becomes very difficult to handle. Sometimes a child’s too much hyperactivity can be signs of ADHD. What is ADHD?
ADHD is an acronym for a behavioral disorder called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. About 8-10% of school age children are affected with this disorder. Boys are most commonly diagnosed with the disorder more than girls, and there is no apparent reason behind this obvious trend.
A child with ADHD is often diagnosed to be ‘very dream’ meaning they find it hard to pay attention on important thing for a long period of time, or they are ‘very active’, they move around too much and unable to satisfy themselves with one activity for a long period of time.
A person who is diagnosed with ADHD finds it hard to concentrate and focus on one thing, his brain has difficulty sorting out the things that is entering it, so the person can be distracted easily. A person with ADHD responds to things fast before he is able to think about the thing and is unable to know when to stop. It is very difficult for a person taking care of a child with ADHD to make him follow instructions because it will take a longer period of time for him to settle than a normal child.
Although a person with ADHD has an above average intelligence level, it is not an easy job to make them learn, mostly because before you can get something to them, they have shifted their attention to another thing. Aside from this, it is also observed that a person positive with this kind of behavioral disorder has problems getting along with others.
ADHD is a long term condition and a child who is diagnosed with it can carry it through his adult life. Although it can’t be cured, they would still be able to live their life normally, like other persons with the help of proper treatment where they would be taught to handle and manage their symptoms. In most cases, ADHD is managed with the combination of proper behavioral therapy and medication. It is also important for the parents to be part of the treatment so they would know how to properly handle their child.
