FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) January 26, 2012 -- The moments following a car accident can be incredibly confusing, but the actions you take at the scene and shortly after your accident will determine your ability to recover all of your damages. Taking time to calm down, think logically, and watch what you say will help ensure you do not sabotage your ability to file a personal injury lawsuit.

At the Scene of the Accident

First, you need to make sure you and your passengers are safe. If anyone is injured, make sure they do not move. Moving can turn a minor injury into something life-threatening. If you are injured, wait for medical personnel to arrive. If you are not so badly injured that you cannot walk, follow these simple steps:

• Call 911 – even if the accident was minor, emergency personnel need to be notified
• Wait at the scene until police and medical professionals arrive – do not move your vehicle before the police arrive
• While waiting, take pictures of the scene with a camera or your cell phone – these pictures will be helpful when establishing your case
• Cooperate with police and medical personnel – file a police report, and allow the EMTs to evaluate you

• Contact your insurance company – even in minor accidents, your insurance company may wish to send an adjustor to the scene
• Wait to leave until the police give you the go-ahead
During your interactions, do not admit fault. Do not admit fault to the police, the EMTs, your insurance company, the other driver, or any witnesses. Some states are tort states. This means that one party will be held responsible for the accident. If you admit fault at the scene of the accident, your ability to collect for your damages is substantially diminished.

In the Days Following an Accident

After any accident you should seek medical assistance. Some injuries may take months to appear, and only a physician can let you know the full extent of your damages. Once you have a clear idea of your physical injuries, contact an experienced car accident attorney to schedule a free consultation. You will need an attorney on your side to ensure you are not cheated out of the money you are owed by insurance companies and the other driver. Only an attorney can help you get the full compensation you are due.
